The year 1912, India was going through a very bad phase. Clouds of despair were hovering all around. On one hand, there was an atmosphere of anarchy in the country due to slavery and on the other hand, the economic condition of the country was deteriorating. Many things happened this year like the Delhi-Lahore Conspiracy case which is known as the Viceroy Harding Bomb Case. Secondly, this year Nehru returned to India after studying abroad. Thirdly, the biggest work that happened this year was the emergence of a Hindi publishing house in Lahore.. and the writings of an immortal writer who was a follower of Vedic religion.
But let us first talk about the publishing house because without it, that great writer is incomplete and without the writer, because of the publication, it was through this publication and the writer that Hindus got a voice of their own. The politics of India and the direction of thinking of Hindus had changed….. Muslims from India to Arabia were enraged by a book published by the publishing house…
The year 1912, at that time, the prevalence of Hindi was very less in Punjab and there were hardly any Hindi publishers either. Then a leader of Arya Samaj, Mr. Rajpal ji opened a publishing house in 1938 and named it “Rajpal and Sons”. You must have heard this name many times. At present its office is in Kashmiri Gate area of Delhi but we are talking about a hundred years ago… when this publishing house used to publish books on social, political and religious topics. As a fearless publisher, it never shied away from any topic. It surprised everyone by publishing one of India’s first books on family planning “Santan Sankhya Ka Seema Bandhan”. But this is not all. Eight years had passed since the publishing house opened. In those days three books published by unknown authors and publishers came in the market. One was named “Krishna Teri Geeta Jalaani Padhegi”, the second was named “Unnisvi Sadi Ka Lampat Maharshi” based on the founder of Arya Samaj, Maharshi Dayanand ji and the third was named “Sita Ka Chhinala” based on the mother. The books were published and were freely distributed through all the mosques of India for 2-3 years. The reason for printing the book was the Shuddhi movement by Swami Shraddhanand ji, a large scale Ghar Wapsi campaign. A large number of Muslims were becoming Hindus, inspired by the ideology of Arya Samaj. So a section of Muslims tried to defame Hindu religion and Arya Samaj by printing the above mentioned book. These books were disgustingly obscene, which included obscene and horrific sketches of Hindu Gods and Goddesses and disgusting misbehavior and gruesome character assassination of Lord Krishna, Dayanand Saraswati and Mother Sita…
There was anger among Hindus in the then Punjab but no one was ready to respond. In response, an Arya Samaj scholar Pandit Chamupati took up the pen and after reading the Quran and Hadith wrote a book on the character of Mohammed, titled Rangeela Rasool… In this book, Mohammed Sahib’s sexual life was discussed. But Chamupati ji did not want the book to be published in his name. The name should also be given but no publisher was ready to publish it, then suddenly a new publisher Mr. Rajpal assured Chamupati of anonymity and instead of the author’s name on the book, he gave the name ‘Doodh Ka Doodh Paani Ka Paani’, but did not hide his name and address…
As was expected, a big uproar broke out as soon as the book was published. Rajpal ji was under a lot of pressure to reveal who the author was. But he did not break his promise. Hence, he became the target of anger. Rajpal ji was murdered… We had mentioned the entire incident in our Rajpal ji episode a few days ago..
But today we will talk about Pandit Chamupati ji, from whose pen Rangeela Rasool came out. Pandit Chamupati was born on 15 February 1893 in Khairpur Ramewala of Bahawalpur. Bahawalpur is now in Pakistan. His original name was Champat Rai. His father’s name was Basandaram Mehta and mother’s name was Uttami Devi. This was the time when if someone obtained an MA degree, his name would spread everywhere. Champat Rai did his matriculation in Urdu and English languages and then did his BA in Urdu, Persian and English from Egerton College of Bahawalpur. Even then Chamupati ji did not know Hindi. He used to call himself an atheist and had no interest in religion and God, but when he saw the Arya Samaj movement and came to know about Swami Dayanand Ji’s thoughts, he was impressed and resolved to do MA in Sanskrit and set a praiseworthy example by passing the examination. He started taking interest in the work of Arya Samaj with all his heart. In 1919, Pandit Ji wrote and published the poetic Urdu biography of Swami Dayanand, “Dayanand Anand Sagar”. In this book, he has used the adjective “Sarware Makhlukat” i.e. ‘Manav Shiromani’ for Swami Dayanand Ji.
Arya Samaj and Swami Ji were so impressed that Champat Rai, who till now called himself an atheist, became Acharya Pandit Chamupati and set out to dedicate himself to the propagation of Vedic religion. In those days, there was a Gurukul in Multan. He became the chief priest of the Gurukul of Multan. He got great success in running that Gurukul.
His relationship with the Gurukul was very old. He became the chief priest of the Gurukul of Multan and he was so successful in running that Gurukul that the then Arya Samaj leader, educationist, historian, freedom fighter and great speaker Acharya Ramdev ji was also impressed by his qualities and brought him to Lahore and prepared him to become a lifelong member of ‘Dayanandam Sevasadan’. Pandit ji stayed in Lahore for many years and edited the Vedic Magazine and the Hindi newspaper ‘Arya’. He became very famous as a speaker and writer. Due to the influence of his loyalty, these newspapers achieved unprecedented success and both the newspapers became popular in the entire country including undivided Punjab…
During this period, he wrote Rangeela Rasool and told the special group conspiring against the Hindu religion that if any book is written on Hindu great men in future, this will be the answer. But in those days, the Arya Samaj was working to awaken Hindus in South Africa and scholars were needed there. So, on behalf of the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha Punjab, you went to Africa in 1925 to propagate Vedic religion and culture. During this visit, there is an incident when the Puranic scholar Pandit Madhavacharya invited Chamupati ji for a debate in which he could insult Pandit Chamupati ji and establish his influence on his disciples. But during the debate, Pandit Chamupati ji politely referred to Pandit Madhavacharya’s wife as his daughter and Pandit Madhavacharya bowed down to him.
During that time, a big incident happened in the country that the terrorists, scared of the Shuddhi movement, killed Swami Shraddhanand ji in Delhi. Thereafter, Gurukul Kangri, a big educational institution of the Aryans, needed a head. Then, starting from 1926, for eight years, you adorned the positions of Upadhyay, Head and Acharya etc. in Gurukul Kangri.
It is said that once Pandit Chamupati had come to Vedic Sadhan Ashram Tapovan, Dehradun, one day when he saw a Hindu fishing in the lake near Tapovan, he even called him an Islamic Hindu. He was a great supporter of non-violence and vegetarianism… He was an extraordinary man dedicated to Vedic culture. He had deep knowledge of Christianity, Islam and Arya principles. His arguments were irrefutable, his pen itself used to work as a sword. The books written by him are like lines drawn on stone even today. Among them, he wrote many books like Som Sarovar, Jeevan Jyoti, Yogeshwar Krishna, Rangeela Rasool Urdu: Dayanand Anand Sagar, Marsiya e Gokhale, Jawahar Javed, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Mazhab Ka Maqsad, Mahatma Gandhi and Arya Samaj, Yajurveda (translation), Gilimpses of Dayanand. He was a scholar of seven languages, Panditji used to write in four languages. Big writers and editors were fascinated by his iron pen which gave birth to knowledge. But he could not live long. Some of the words spoken by him are immortal even today. He had said that today Dayanand is the king not only in India but in the entire religious, social and political world. The propagators of different religions have changed their views, have amended the meanings of religious books, have made changes in the biographies of great men. Swamiji’s life speaks in these biographies. Rishis do not die, they live in the form of their sentiments. Who is the soul of Dalit upliftment? Patit Pavan Dayanand. Who is the soul of social reform? Ideal reformer Dayanand. Where does the inspiration for the promotion of education come from? From the conduct of Guruvar Dayanand… Who hails the Vedas? Brahmarishi Dayanand… Who teaches the way of respecting goddesses like mother etc.? Goddess worshipper Dayanand… Who takes up the task of showing compassion to all living beings in the matter of cow protection? Karunanidhi Dayanand…
Come! Let us paint ourselves in the colour of Rishi Dayanand. Let our thoughts be the thoughts of the Rishi, our conduct be the conduct of the Rishi, our propaganda be the propaganda of the Rishi… let our every action be the Rishi’s action… let the sound of ‘Maharishi Dayanand ki Jai’ arise from every nerve… With these words, Pandit ji died in Lahore on 15 June 1937 at the age of 44 while dedicating his life to Vedic religion and propagating it… Arya Samaj salutes Pandit Chamupati ji, the great devotee of philanthropy
